Nigeria has marked a historic milestone in cultural heritage preservation with the official unveiling of the Nigeria National Virtual Museum, a state-of-the-art digital platform designed to make the nation’s rich history and artefacts accessible to audiences across the globe.

The launch ceremony, held in Lagos, was hosted by the National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM) in partnership with IHS Nigeria, a leading provider of digital infrastructure. The initiative was applauded by dignitaries, cultural custodians, technology innovators and tourism stakeholders as a forward-looking investment in both cultural preservation and national identity.

The Honourable Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy, Barrister Hannatu Musa Musawa, described the virtual museum as a defining project in the country’s cultural history. She praised the NCMM and IHS Nigeria for their collaboration and vision, noting that the project aligns perfectly with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which places a premium on harnessing technology to grow tourism, empower communities and protect cultural heritage.

“This platform ensures that Nigeria’s priceless cultural artefacts, traditions and historical records are no longer confined to physical museum walls. We are creating a living archive that will inspire, educate and connect generations of Nigerians and the global community,” the Honourable Minister remarked.

The Nigeria National Virtual Museum offers immersive, high-resolution displays of over 200 actual artefacts from the National Museum Lagos, which have been 3D scanned and tagged with educational content to provide viewers with detailed information. The platform also features interactive storytelling and detailed historical documentation, serving as an invaluable resource for students, researchers, cultural enthusiasts and the Nigerian diaspora, allowing them to explore and engage with the nation’s heritage without geographical limitations.

IHS Nigeria’s involvement in the project underscores the vital role of public-private partnerships in driving sustainable cultural and technological innovation. With its extensive expertise in digital infrastructure, IHS Nigeria provided critical support to make this pioneering project a reality, ensuring that Nigeria’s cultural treasures are preserved and shared globally.

The NCMM has confirmed that the platform will be regularly updated with new exhibits, expanded historical archives and educational content, ensuring its relevance as both a cultural resource and a tourism driver. The digital museum is free for all visitors and can be explored online at www.museum.ng. Plans are also underway to integrate the virtual museum with global tourism platforms, positioning Nigeria as a leader in digital cultural tourism within Africa.

With this bold step, Nigeria is not only safeguarding its past but also shaping its future, offering the world a window into the soul of the nation — a rich tapestry of traditions, artistry, resilience and innovation. The Nigeria National Virtual Museum stands as a testament to the power of collaboration, vision and the enduring value of cultural heritage in national development.

In her closing words, the Honourable Minister Barrister Hannatu Musa Musawa reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring that Nigeria’s cultural heritage remains both protected and celebrated. “This is not only a gift to our generation but a legacy for generations yet unborn. Our history will live, our stories will be told and our heritage will continue to shine as a beacon of pride for Nigeria and Africa.”
