The Member House of Representative representing Oshodi lsolo II Federal Constituency Honourable (Bar)Jesse Okey Joe Onuakalusi has collaborated with National Biotechnology Research Development Agency to offer free eye care services to 1000 constituents in Ajao Estate.

Newsconnect reports that the exercise marked the sixth edition of his intervention to assist his constituency of eye-related issues which limit their ability to carry out their day to day activities.

The theme of the event was dubbed “Glaucoma: Approaches for Detection, Monitoring and Treatment”. held at lgbo House,Ajao Estate, Lagos.

Constituent members within and outside Ajao-Estate community showed up at the venue of the exercise for their free medical checkups.

In his opening salvo,the federal lawmaker, who was ably represented by his Senior Special Adviser on Politics and Culture, High Chief John Uche said that the outreach includes counselling, diagnosis of the eye and provision of free medical eye glass as the programme was part of his efforts to improve the health and living conditions of his constituents.

According to him, “Health experts from the National Biotechnology Research Development Agency are in charge for two days to counsel our people, test, administer drugs and present eyeglasses for those that are due for it. Provision is made for at least 1000 people”he said.

” I am here based on the promises l made during my campaign within this environment and one of the promises l made was to provide free medical treatment and this is part of it. We have done it in Ejigbo and Okota, today we are here in Ajao,l want to assure you that the exercise would continue, and l urge those who have not benefited to exercise patience.”he stated.

High Chief Uche went further to highlight some of the achievements of Hon Okey Joe Onuakalusi which includes provision of clean borehole water,solar lights,construction of schools within lsolo axis, payment of school fees for indigent children and scholarship to over 1000 children in Oshodi lsolo II Federal Constituency noting that he has done excellently well compared to those who are representatives in Lagos State.

The Guest lecturer,Dr Awawu Obasi stated that regular eye check will help individuals to easily detect glaucoma and treat it immediately.

Speaking on the topic”Glaucoma: Approaches for Detection, Monitoring and Treatment”,Dr Obasi stated that there are two types of glaucoma which are”open angle and angle closure glaucoma “stating that the eye is the second organ in the body and whenever one has issue,early detection will save the day.

“If you go for regular eye check,it can be detected and treatment is possible,it is only when you don’t go for regular check that it can lead to eye blindness”

“Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the world and the risk factors are those above 40years,those who have family history of glaucoma, diabetic and hypertensive patients, once you know that you are hypertensive and diabetic,it is good for you to go for regular check up so that it can be detected because it does not have signs and symptoms.it comes slowly, damage the nerves and eyes”she submitted.

Dr Obasi opined that the essence of the free medical test by the lawmaker in collaboration with the agency was to examine the patients and give them free eye glasses as many of them cannot afford to get the eye glass and now they are getting it free,she said.

The Special Adviser on Media to the lawmaker,Mazi Chuks Nwosu urge the people to use the opportunity provided by the lawmaker to have their eyes checked so as detect any signs of glaucoma and possibly received treatment.

Mazi Nwosu who acknowledge the event as a success noted that those who don’t have the finance to have a regular eye check and possibly have glasses would be glad to do so and have early detection of glaucoma.

He appealed to the people of Oshodi lsolo II to keep praying for the lawmaker as he has promised to impact lives and bring more dividends to their doorstep.

Speaking with investigator news a beneficiary, Mr Felix Uzoma commended the lawmaker for bringing succour to them, lamenting that he had been battling with the issue of eye problem for over four years but with the medical outreach he believed,it will be corrected.

Another beneficiary, Mrs Helen Akpan also appreciated the federal lawmaker for his selfless service, lamenting that she had issues with her eyes for the past 3 years but respite had come at last through the help of their federal legislator.

Highlight of the event was free eye glass,drugs and free eye test.

Those in attendance were the representatives of National Biotechnology Research Development Agency, Chairman Labour Party, Oshodi lsolo LGA, Bishop Remigus Agu,Sir Valentine Abor,Ward Secretary Ajao,Mrs Margaret lrokwe, Woman leader Ajao,Dr Jairus,High Chief John Uche,S.A Politics and Culture,Mazi Chuks Nwosu and many other LP Chieftains.
