As Nigeria commemorates June 12 Democracy Day, Honourable Sanni Ganiyu Okanlawon extends profound congratulations to the government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on the historic occasion of 26 consecutive years of uninterrupted democratic rule.
Describing the milestone as a testament to the resilience, courage, and collective will of the Nigerian people, Hon. Okanlawon noted that since the return to civilian governance in 1999, Nigeria has made significant strides in entrenching democratic values despite daunting challenges.
“Today, we honour the sacrifices of our democratic heroes, particularly the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola, whose struggle and vision for a free, fair, and prosperous Nigeria laid the foundation for the democratic freedoms we now enjoy. June 12 is more than a date—it is an enduring symbol of the people’s sovereignty, the power of the ballot, and the triumph of justice over tyranny,” he stated.
Hon. Okanlawon emphasized that 26 years of democratic continuity is a remarkable achievement that must not be taken for granted. It reflects the maturation of our democratic institutions, the deepening of civic engagement, and the growing culture of accountability and governance by consent.
He urged leaders across all levels of government to use this occasion as a moment of reflection and recommitment—to strengthen democratic institutions, safeguard civil liberties, and deliver on the core promises of democracy: security, prosperity, justice, and equity for all Nigerians.
“Democracy must go beyond periodic elections. It must translate into tangible improvements in the lives of our people. It must promote inclusion, uphold the rule of law, and guarantee equal opportunities for every citizen regardless of background or status,” Hon. Okanlawon declared.
He further called on Nigerians, particularly the youth, to remain actively engaged in the democratic process, to defend the gains of the last two and a half decades, and to work tirelessly toward building a more just, united, and prosperous nation.
“Let us draw strength from our democratic journey and forge ahead with renewed purpose, guided by the ideals of patriotism, service, and national unity. Together, we must ensure that democracy not only survives but thrives—for this generation and those yet unborn.”
As the nation reflects on its progress and looks to the future, Hon. Sanni Okanlawon reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to transparent leadership, responsible representation, and the continuous advancement of democratic governance in Nigeria.
Happy Democracy Day!
