Parents had been admonished to prioritize building strong, non-judgmental relationships with their children, encouraging open communication and trust. This approach enables kids to freely share their thoughts, feelings, and experiences without fear of condemnation or harsh criticism.
This admonishment was made by the Chairman, Ikorodu Division Human Resources Development Board (IDHRDB), Bashorun Tajudeen Rotinwa , on Thursday,in a Key note Address at the 5th Education Stakeholders’ Summit, Ikorodu, Lagos State.
According to him, ” Parent must learn not to be dogmatic but flexible while dealing with their kids, they should create a good relationship with them, listen attentively, ask index questions, validate emotions, apology where and when needed, avoid dismissing concern, encourage expressions, show interest in their life, make their feelings valued, follow every reported cases thorough to ensure a better future and protect them from fighting low self-esteem.”
Mr. Babatunde emphasized the important role of education in empowering future generations, stating that it is the cornerstone of personal and societal development. He underscored that education equips individuals with the essential skills, knowledge, and values necessary to succeed and thrive in an ever-evolving world.
He also highlighted how Technological advancements, shifting societal values, and the increasing interconnectedness of global economies are transforming the way we think and learn. This transformation brings both obstacles and opportunities for individuals, necessitating adaptability and resilience .
Reaffirming the aim of this summit, he said, ” This summit provides a unique platform for us to engage in meaningful dialogue, share best practices and to forge new partnership.it is through these collaborative efforts that we will be able to address the pressing issues facing our educational system such as access to quality education, the integration of technology in learning ,importance of lifelong learning and the need to prepare student for an uncertain future.
The Chairman (IDHRDB), Mr Babatunde, also expressed his utmost gratitude to the audience and its committee members for their presence and continuous contribution to the field of education.
Former Director, National Airspace Management Agency, Dr.Ganiyu Ishola Agbaje who also gave a keynote address on FAMILY STRUCTURE, CHILD SOCIALISATION AND CHILDREN’S HOLISTIC DEVELOPMENT “, emphasized on how Western Nation has successfully deprived Nigerians and other Africans of their childhood cultural and traditional practices that supported healthy socialisation of children, hence ,affected them mentally, physically, emotionally and socially wise.
He however, implored school owners to consult and collaboratively work with traditional personnels / local artisans to share Ancient stories with the children as this will help them learn more about their routine and bridge the gap between children and Parents/ Elders.
Haven citied examples of children whom have been negatively influenced by the society and faulty upbringing , he encouraged parent to teach sexual education, monitor what the children work, provide good nutrition but be actively involved in their lives, provide safety and security, make them contribute to vital and make them feel important at home.
Another highlight of the summit was a Round Table discussion which had the presence of the Parent Form Chairman, Mr Jarade Mokolade Abdulwasi, President NICKS, Comrade Ogunlewe Olatayo Bodurin, Principal Ifelodun Senior High School, J.O Oguntade, Lagos State Civil Service, Oyeboye Sekinat and A Shoe Maker, Mr Benson Adesola, anchored by The C.E.O Ikorodu Oga Radio,Omooba Akinyemi Adepeju as they discussed on the mental Health of children from Broken and faulty homes, how they can effectively strive through the struggle and the essence of skill development above school certification.
Other activities included; Cultural dance from the students of Oriwu High School, cash disbursement and Award Recognition of High Profiled dignitaries, Sponsors of school projects , Schools,Teachers, Principals and students who have triumphed excellently in the year 2023 and 2024 West African Examination Council (WAEC) and Basic Education Certification Examination (BECE) .
The event was graced by the Chairman Ikorodu Financial Bond, Former Chairman , Ikorodu Division Resource Development Group ( IDRDG), Majority Leader ,Lagos State House of Representative, Oba Ayangburen Palace of Ikorodu, CEO, Homat Group of School, Kabiyesi, Ipakodo Kingdom, Commissioner of Tourism, Art and Culture , represented by his Permanent Secretary, Representative of the Senator , Lagos State East Senatorial District amongst other personalities.
