Dr Bosun Tijani
The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, has revealed that telecom tariffs will soon be adjusted, though the increase will fall short of the 100% requested by telecom operators.
Following a stakeholders meeting with Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) in Abuja, Tijani highlighted the government’s ongoing consultations and reassured Nigerians that the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) would announce the new tariffs soon.
“Telecom companies have been pushing for a 100% tariff increase. However, we will not approve such a steep hike. The NCC is still reviewing the situation and will provide a clear directive on the way forward,” Tijani stated.
He emphasized the importance of balancing consumer protection with ensuring that telecom companies can continue to invest in the sector, adding that the government would no longer leave infrastructure investments solely to private entities.
In his remarks,Dr. Aminu Maida, Executive Vice-Chairman of the NCC, assured that the percentage increase would be announced after further consultations. He added that stakeholders would meet again in two weeks to review feedback and finalize the tariff adjustments.
Femi Adeniran, speaking on behalf of Airtel Nigeria’s CEO, stressed the necessity of tariff adjustments to manage rising operational costs, ensuring the sector’s sustainability and continued service improvement for consumers
