At the Eko Safe roads campaign organised by Coalition of Nigerian Youth on Security and Safety Affairs (CONYSSA) in Partnership with FRSC, LASTMA, NSCDC and Ogwus youth empowerment Initiative and Community Development Organization, the stakeholders appeal to road users to do away with phones when driving and on the roads.

The Director General Lagos State Safety Commission who was ably represented at the event by Engr. Lanre Omojola sensitised Lagosians and participants on road hazards and control measures to mitigate and eradicate it.

Omoja said; “Safety is key and we must take it seriously. Fire extinguisher in the car must not be expired. Check if it is due for servicing or you need to replace it.

” Safety is everyone’s responsibility. Some drivers aid and abet some passengers to break traffic rules. They encourage drivers to drive through one way so they can get to where they are going on time.

“Reckless drivers trying to beat the traffic light and over speed.

“If we can take congnisance of the things we do on the road, it will be easy to eradicate unsafe hands on our roads”. He said.

State Co-ordinator of the Coalition (CONYSSA), Amb. Akanni Michael briefed the participants at the Launching, significance of the Initiative and objective of the Campaign; the use of mobile phones has become an integral part of daily lives. However, the use of mobile phones while driving or walking on our roads has become a significant concern for Road Safety. This hazardous behavior poses a substantial threat to the well-being of drivers, pedestrian, and other road users.

National Patrons of CONYSSA, Dr. Adebamiji Oluniyi also spoke at the Launching, encourage drivers are pedestrian to take safety a priority and put away phones or any distracted materials while driving on the roads.

The President of Ogwus Youth Empowerment and Community Development Organization European Engineer Chinedu Ogwus said;

“This event is so special for Lagosians, it is an event created to ensure that there is safety of lives. Recently there have been deaths, accidents caused by the use of phone on our roads in Lagos.

“This campaign is to ensure that road users stop using phone while driving. Stop being distracted because distractions while driving can kill. Use of phone while driving is no no.

“The government should also remove the bad boys on the road because they distract drivers. Most accident we have are being caused as a result of bad roads that we have today.

“We want government to install CCTV in all junctions, in all street of Lagos to reduce criminality. It is possible”. He said
