RAfrica’s biggest music talent show, Nigerian Idol Season 9, sponsored by Bigi Carbonated Soft Drink brand, kicked off its live shows on Sunday, May 27th, 2024. The judges, Omawumi, 9ice, and Ric Hassani, were thoroughly impressed by the vocal versatility and strength displayed in the competition, which offered a life-changing grand prize.
Following weeks of intense auditions and exciting theatre week performances that garnered crucial fan votes, the competition narrowed down to the Top 9 and the viewers voted for the 10th contestant, Lammy who formerly tied with Japh Kenti.
The excitement was palpable on Sunday as Chima opened the show with a powerful rendition of Teddy Swims’ “Lose Control.” Omawumi declared it a “wonderful performance,” while Ric Hassani and 9ice echoed her praise for his incredible rendition.
Gracia, the second contestant, took the stage with David Guetta’s “Titanium.” Her unique voice and mesmerizing synergy with the backup singers left the audience and judges speechless. Omawumi called it “incredible,” while 9ice and Ric Hassani commended her “wonderful performance.”
Lammy delivered a splendid rendition of John Legend’s “All of Me,” earning praise and encouragement from the three judges. Omawumi particularly asked that he put in more work to deliver his best in his upcoming performances.
Stevie surprised everyone with his captivating performance of “A Million Dreams” from The Greatest Showman. His powerful vocals captivated the audience and earned him high praise from Ric Hassani who stated, “I love that rendition, you took us on a journey and landed us safely.”
Lady Ruth followed with a beautiful rendition of Beyoncé’s high notes in “Drunk in Love.” 9ice applauded her vibrant performance, “Great job. Your performance has us getting drunk tonight.”
David Garland took the judges and audience on a journey with his rendition of Harry Styles’ “Falling.” Omawumi expressed her pride by saying, “I am so proud of this act,” 9ice commended him, and said, “You did well.”
Maio brought the house down with his energetic performance of Wizkid’s “Ojuelegba.” The judges were impressed by his talent. 9ice declared it his best performance, calling him “posh Wizkid”” while Ric Hassani praised his “versatility” and Omawumi declared him a “lovely, 360 performer.”
Jennifer raised the bar even further with Andra Day’s “Rise Up,” Omawumi stated, “You’re a vocal bully! You sing from your belly like you can relate with the song” while Ric Hassani complimented her, calling her a “combination of Omawumi and Waje in one” followed by Mira Clear’s powerhouse performance of Sia’s inspirational song, “Unstoppable.” The judges applauded her stage presence and encouraged her to truly be unstoppable by confidently giving them more of her voice of texture.
Chioma’s sweet rendition of “Never Enough” from The Greatest Showman was met with cheers. Ric Hassani commended her, stating that this was his best performance for the night.
