Mustafa Aderemi Akeem
LAGOS — Tensions surrounding pro-democracy campaigner Mustafa Aderemi Akeem have reignited following a violent break-in at his residence on March 19, 2025, during which his wife suffered a miscarriage as a result of the assault.
According to documents and witness accounts obtained by Newsconnect, the attack was carried out by unknown assailants who forcibly entered the home in the early hours, physically assaulting Akeem’s wife and leaving behind a handwritten threat: “Tell your husband to stop his useless activism.”
Medical records, voice recordings, and written evidence linked to the case have since been submitted to international human rights monitors for independent verification.
Sources close to Akeem suggest the March attack was the most severe in a string of attempts to intimidate the activist, who has remained a vocal critic of electoral malpractice and state corruption.
Multiple international advocacy groups are now reportedly preparing formal appeals for asylum on Akeem’s behalf, citing credible threats to his life and growing concerns over the Nigerian government’s ability or willingness to offer protection.
The latest incident has further underscored warnings by security analysts who previously described the targeting of Akeem as part of a “systemic effort to silence activists critical of the government.”
Despite repeated requests, officials from the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services, and Ministry of Interior have yet to issue a public statement on the matter.
