In mitigating preventable road accidents in Lagos so that the dreams of future leaders are not recklessly truncated, a non governmental organization Ogwus Youth Empowerment and Community Development Organisation collaborated with CONYSSA to intensify advocacy on road safety.

Newsconnect reports that through the Eko Safe roads campaign of Coalition of Nigerian Youth on Security and Safety Affairs (CONYSSA), Ogwus youth empowerment and other stakeholders intensified campaign to sensitize the public to obey the traffic rules.
At the advocacy campaign, Lagosians and participants were reminded that their phones can wait, but life can’t, hence people should be focused while driving.
Other than sensitising Lagosians and participants about road hazards and control measures, the campaign to obey traffic rule was also launched.

In an interview with Newsconnect correspondence and The President of Ogwus Youth Empowerment and Community Development Organisation at the campaign ground, European Engineer Chinedu Ogwus said;
“This event is so special for Lagosians, it is an event created to ensure that there is safety of lives. Recently there have been deaths, accidents caused by the use of phone on our roads in Lagos.
“This campaign is to ensure that road users stop using phone while driving. Stop being distracted because distractions while driving can kill. Use of phone while driving is no no.
“The government should also remove the bad boys on the road because they distract drivers. Most accident we have are being caused as a result of bad roads that we have today.
“We are not comfortable driving at nights. You wake up from sleep, driving to work, you see homeless people. The government should ensure these people are being removed from the Street. Street hawkings should be stopped. These are things that cause distraction on the roads, it makes the driver to lose control.
“We want government to install CCTV in all junctions, in all street of Lagos to reduce criminality. It is possible”. He said
Representative of DG Lagos State Safety Commission Mr Lanre Omojola in his remark reiterated that safety is key, and we must take it seriously.
“Fire extinguisher must not be expired in the car. Check if it is due for servicing, if you need to replace it.
“Safety is everyone’s responsibility. Some passengers aid and abet some drivers to pass one way so they can get to where they are going on time. Reckless drivers beating the traffic light and over speed. Lets take congnisance of the things we do on the road, so that unsafe hands can be eradicated on our roads”.
Some of the uniform organizations at the campaign ground to launch the campaign to obey traffic rules in Lagos include Peace Corps, Red Cross, Girls guide, NYCN, , Royal rangers, Cadet cross, First aid group amon others.
