40 fishermen have collaboratively slaughtered a mother hippopotamus that claimed the life of a guard, Mallam Usman Maigadi, on Ochard Farm land owned by the Emir of Yauri, Dr. Muhammad Zayyanu-Abdullahi on September 22.

According to The News Agency Of Nigeria, the fishermen who were equipped with bows and arrows, successfully slayed the hippopotamus in Yauri River, Yauri Local Government Area on Monday.

Validating the news, the Chairman of Yauri Local Government Area, Alhaji Abubakar Shu’aibu said that the animal was slaughtered following a directive from the Emir, Dr Muhammad ,after  the  record  of  another death of a farmer in the same vein  on September.

”We can’t keep harbouring an  animal that is killing people anyhow because these  people that have been  killed were  even busy  doing their own fishing business and not taunting it”

Meanwhile  The dead hippopotamus was later conveyed on a big canoe  to the palace of the District Head of Gungu, Alhaji Kasimu Aliyu,  amidst cheers and celebration from the crowd.

The Chairman, Alhaji Shu’aibu also disclosed that the hippopotamus was later butchered and its meat, shared with the residents in the community.
