The Lagos State Government has strengthened its commitment to rural development and nutrition security with the commissioning of a Type A Water Scheme in Igbonla Community, Eredo Local Council Development Area (LCDA), alongside a sensitisation campaign promoting Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) practices.
The sensitisation programme, themed “Promotion of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Practices in Igbonla Community, Eredo LCDA”, underscored the government’s determination to improve living standards and safeguard public health in rural areas.
Speaking at the event, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Rural Development, Dr. Nurudeen Yekinni Agbaje, described WASH as a crucial pillar of the Lagos State Multi-Sectoral Plan of Action for Food and Nutrition Security (2025–2029).
He stressed that clean water access, proper sanitation, and good hygiene practices are directly linked to health, food safety, and community well-being.
”Without clean water, people risk waterborne diseases such as cholera, typhoid, and dysentery. Without sanitation, waste contaminates our environment and water sources.”
”Without good hygiene practices, infections spread rapidly, especially among children. This is why promoting WASH is inseparable from ensuring food and nutrition security,” Dr. Agbaje stated.
Represented by Mr. Fadunsi Kehinde, Deputy Director of Technical Services, Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development, Dr. Agbaje officially handed over the facility to Chief Fasasi Quadri, Baale of Igbonla Community.
Kehinde urged residents to take ownership of the project, ensuring its proper use and maintenance for the collective good of the community.
In his appreciation, Chief Fasasi lauded Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for extending critical infrastructure, often associated with urban centres, to rural communities.
He assured that the facility would be “jealously safeguarded” and expressed optimism for more developmental projects in Igbonla.
The commissioning ceremony was graced by notable dignitaries, including the representative of the Alara of Ilara Kingdom, the Olori-Ebi of Igbonla, Chief Kamoru Ismahil; the Olotu of Ilara Land, Chief Jelili Olayemi, and other community leaders.
The initiative forms part of the T.H.E.M.E.S Plus Agenda of Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration, particularly under the pillars of Health and Environment, reinforcing the state’s pledge to deliver life-changing infrastructure and public health programmes across all communities in Lagos State.
